May the aim of these aspirations be swiftly accomplished without hindrance!

And thus, due to the earnest request of all the faithful students who had a connection with him that there was a need for a prayer for the swift rebirth of Khalkha Jetsün Dampa Rinpoche, Jampel Namdröl Chökyi Gyeltsen Zangpo, who recently passed into peace, from those at the principal Jonang monastery and all secondary Jonangpa religious institutions, the Gomang College of Drepung Monastery, Ganden Monastery in Mongolia, the Samlo quarters of Sera Je Monastery, the lamas’ quarters at Ganden Monastery and so forth, and for myself as well, who knew this Sublime Being since I was ten years old, as I later recollected the wishes of these determined, responsible, and altruistic practitioners of the general and particular intentions of the Teachings, I, the Dharma friend of this Sublime One, the Shākya shramaa and Dharma exponent, the Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, composed a prayer of entreaty in powerful terms, in the Water Dragon Year of the 17th Rabjung cycle, in the 1st month and on the 12th day, being the the 5th day of the 3rd month of the year 2012 [March 5th, 2012] by the Western calendar.

The Benefits of Circumambulations

The Benefits of Circumambulations

 ·

Concerning the benefits of circumambulating the supports for worship and stūpas which are representations of the Sugata’s enlightened body, speech, and mind:

In the Verses of Circumambulating Stūpas, it says:

What are the benefits of circumambulating

The stūpas of the Protector of the Universe?

As for that, with mere words

It cannot be demonstrated well, even over the period of a whole day.

And:

The praiseworthiness of any person who circumambulates

The stūpas of the Protector of the Universe,

Even if it were expressed for a million eons,

Could not be exhausted.

And:

Through circumambulating stūpas,

The eight non-freedoms are abandoned.

Through circumambulating stūpas,

One will be endowed with mindfulness and imbued with intelligence,

Have good complexion and wisdom,

And all will make offerings to one.

Through circumambulating stūpas,

Gods and likewise humans

Will attain long life thereby,

And attain great fame as well.

And from the Vinaya:

Whatever learned person who, with intensely clear mind,

Walks around the stūpas of the Buddha,

Will be like unto one hundred thousand times

The weight of the gold in Earth’s rivers.

And from the Circumambulation Dhāranī:

ADORATION TO THE BHAGAVAN, THE TATHĀGATA, THE ARHAT, THE PERFECTLY COMPLETE BUDDHA RATNADHVAJA, JEWELED VICTORY BANNER!

NAMO BHAGAVATE RATNAKETU RĀJĀYA/ TATHĀGATĀYA/ ARHATE/ SAMYAKSAMBUDDHĀYA/ TADYATHĀ/ OM RATNE RATNE MAHĀRATNE RATNA VIJAYA SVĀHĀ

By reciting this and circumambulating even once, it causes it to become immeasurable.

So it is taught. In this way, if one circumambulates a representation of the Sugata’s enlightened body, speech, and mind while reciting this dhāranī-mantra, the benefits become much more powerful. Since it taught thus, it is important that everyone do so.

Do not believe...

buddha.jpg

“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.

Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by

many.

Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your

religious books.

Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and

elders.

Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for

many generations.

But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees

with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then

accept it and live up to it.”
